TODAY IN TITANIC HISTORY: April 12th, 2012.

100 years ago today, on April 12th, 1912, the RMS Titanic was making its journey across the North Atlantic Ocean to New York City.

Two days before, on April 10th, Titanic had set sail to begin its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, along with stopping at Cherbourg, France later that same day, and then made its way to Cork Harbour on April 11th to drop off/receive passengers and cargo from Queenstown, Ireland; which was Titanic’s last stop before heading for New York.

Waters were reported calm, and weather nice; the journey for passengers and crew was going as scheduled. Titanic receives some ice warnings from various ships on the 12th, and even a few the day before; this is not uncommon for April. The ice warnings would continue daily, being received by Titanic’s radio operators, John “Jack” Phillips and Harold Bride. Titanic makes good time, covering hundreds of miles since it had left Ireland.

The photo above is not from April 12th, but was taken between April 10th-11th by Father Francis Browne, who sailed on the Titanic for only a short time. He boarded the Titanic in Southampton on the 10th, and then departed the ship when Titanic docked in Ireland on the 11th.

Jack stole his hat and coat from this guy. Look at the deck chair.

nice ^
